Tana French “In The Woods”

Lately it has become extremely fashionable to be self-sufficient. The kind of wholesome, moderately self-assured, “I’m fine on my own” person. A single cell of society, which in principle does not need anyone, festive human being itself.

And I am one of these people, who being in a “dark non-perishable cave” persuades myself that I need nobody and, most importantly, nothing.

And then I thought about a tree. It stands alone in the forest, or in a field, or on the side of the road… anywhere. And it’s fine, it doesn’t need anyone or anything. It doesn’t depend on anyone. It grows for years and decades.

But no! What is a tree without light and sunshine? What is a tree without rain and moisture?

And so exactly the same for us. No matter how much we want to be independent and self-sufficient – we need nature, books, music, food, air… and, of course, the people around us. Family – relatives, which we do not choose, and family – friends, which, time and distance have sometimes made more dear than a sister.

It’s just a pity that sometimes this tree can’t choose where to grow.
